Insights, perspective and connections

Every year, the Strategic School Staffing Summit gives me a chance to pause and learn alongside people across the field who are wrestling with a shared challenge: How do we organize adults differently so both students and educators experience better outcomes?

This year’s 2-day, all-virtual Summit is built around that shared question. The Summit agenda reflects where the field is right now, with sessions grounded in real practice, informed by policy and shaped by the work of educators, system leaders, policymakers, researchers, community partners and others who are actively learning and adapting in schools and systems across the country.

Whether you’re exploring strategic school staffing for the first time or deepening work already underway, the Summit offers insights, perspective and connections you can take back to your own work and community. Below are a few sessions I especially recommend, depending on your role and interests.

For system and policy leaders: Check out the North Dakota Lead Teacher Registered Apprenticeship session for a look at building sustainable, federally supported pipelines.

Team-based school staffing expands across states, improving outcomes for students and educators

In just seven years, Next Education Workforce team-based models have grown from one school in a single state to 128 schools across 16 states and two countries. Schools using these models are seeing lower absenteeism and failure rates, stronger academic growth and more satisfied educators. Learn how team-based staffing is helping schools move beyond the one-teacher, one-classroom model to better serve students and sustain and support educators in the profession.

A national first: North Dakota’s new approach to team-teaching

This year, North Dakota became the first state in the nation to be approved by the U.S. Department of Labor for a Lead Teacher Registered Apprenticeship, a major milestone in rethinking how schools can recruit, develop and retain educators.

Recently, educators from North Dakota schools and the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, led by NDDPI Chief of Program Development and Growth Laurie Matzke, visited Arizona to learn more about the role of Lead Teachers and visit schools with team-based strategic school staffing models.
